Seagate 100 GB Portable External Hard Drive ( 9W3638-556 ) Customer Reviews
Worked for 2 months, then died
-
Was an excellent drive for a very short period of time. Then it just died suddenly, with 50 GB of critical data on it. Now Seagate wants anywhere from $1000-2500 to get the data off of a $200 drive. I've owned over a dozen external HD's, and have never had one fail, certainly not after 2 months. Seagate's customer service leaves much to be desired, they're not helpful and run around circles within their own policy.
My advice, stay away from this Seagate drive.10/20/2006 12:00 AM | Rating:

Best Drive Ever ... I must have more

Excellent product. I'm a Seagate fan. I bought this to backup my wife's work laptop. I can't think of a better solution for a solopreneur who travels. The size, speed and capacity is ideal - in terms of size, think of the old external floppy drives for IBM Thinkpads - fits in the palm of your hand. The design is impressive and it's built rock solid. Easy to transport, fast, tons of storage, and best of all...thankfully, no power brick to tote around in your briefcase. I know I'll be buying another one. I've only used this with WinXP and newer PCs but haven't had to use the 2nd USB they include (in case you need more power - I think a USB 1.1 issue). That wouldn't have changed my opinion anyway - I have to bring the cable with me to attach it to the laptop, so what's the difference - it's a short Y-cable. I have run videos from it without issue. This is a winner.

Small, fast and easy to install

Just got it... And while I'm writing this review, it is backing up all my data... Had some issues with big files (>4GB) due to the FAT32 limitation, but a WINRAR resolved the problem completly. It's very fast, silent and an excellent looks. The blue light keeps blinking as it is been used. It comes with a additional drivers/software (don't need to install if you don't want to), I only install a seagate driver (just in case), even though Windows recognized it properly.

very good

More than adequate capacity.Reasonably fast.Is somewhat heavier and larger than the Lacie Porsche but doesn't feel anywhere near as flimsy.Very robust design.I treat it reasonably roughly (when off) and have never had any indication of problems.Never had a problem with detection.

Won't even show up on Windows Explorer. Add Hardware can't find it. Does not show up as USB device or disk drive. Should come with power supply. (YES, the blue light comes on fine. Appears to haver power. It hums!)
